Sending a Kansas City Royals Baseball & Boulevard Beer Into Space

Kansas City Royals is a Major League Baseball team playing in the Central division of the American League – and an extremely successful one at that, having won a whopping four American League pennants and two World Series championships. When it came time to pick an Official Craft Beer supplier, the team didn’t have to look any further than its own backyard, selecting the Kansas City born-and-brewed Boulevard Brewing Company. The company has gone on to become the largest speciality brewer in the Midwest since its founding in 1989, making it the ideal sponsor for one of the region’s greatest baseball teams.

A Stratospheric Showcase

Kansas City Royals and Boulevard Brewing Co. approached Sent Into Space to help them collaborate on a stratospheric showcase that would present both brands’ iconography against the blackness of space, the curvature of the Earth and the thin blue line of its atmosphere. The only stipulation was that the craft had to take off from Kansas City Royals’ very own Kaufmann Stadium, meaning a journey to the good ol’ US of A was on the cards for our very excited launch team.

Engineered to Perfection

Buoyed by the lure of a transatlantic trip, the creative and tech teams put their heads together and came up with a home run of a feature item: a miniaturised batters box adorned with a Kansas City Royals baseball and a can of Boulevard Brewery Company’s aptly named Space Camper IPA. With the engineering done and dusted, all that was left was to pack our bags, decamp to the airport and settle in for the long-haul flight.

Beer and Baseball In Space, Kansas City Style

Come launch day, we set off with a spring in our step – and a sprinkling of jet lag – to meet the Kansas City Royals and Boulevard Brewing Co. teams at Kauffman Stadium. After setting up on the pitcher’s mound, we filled the balloon, gave the flight-path predictions one last check and sent the craft on its epic voyage into the unknown.

It turns out the sub-zero temperatures of space make for one hell of a cosmic beer cooler, providing the recovery team with a perfectly chilled beverage to celebrate a job well done once the Kansas City Royals spacecraft made landfall with its baseball and beer attached.
