MISSION

Capture 8K footage that can be shown in-store on Samsung’s 8K TVs

Samsung is known for their cutting-edge tech and high quality displays. They came to us looking for some spectacular 8K footage of space to be displayed in-store on their flagship range of 8K TVs, and it’s safe to say we were up for the challenge.

EXECUTION

To capture footage in temperature environments as low as -65°C with less than 0.3% of normal air pressure, we had to extensively modify a cutting-edge 8K RED Helium camera to operate under extreme conditions. We manufactured our own dual-channel thermal control system, modifying the camera’s internal heatsink to replace the fans with a water cooling system and implementing an intelligent power cycling process which used the camera’s own heat generation to regulate temperature throughout the flight.

Launched from continental Europe to capture a dramatic city coastline, we timed our flights to coincide with the sun setting over the ocean.

The flight was successful, capturing spectacular 8K footage of the blackness of space with the Earth’s curvature visible below. In doing so, we captured the world’s first 8K video in open space.
