Despite not having an official presence in the US market, OPPO has become a certified smartphone behemoth across the rest of the world – second only to Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi in terms of market share.
The brand has made quite a name for itself by creating devices with imaging capabilities that rival standalone cameras, something that’s made them rather popular with photographers craving a pocket-sized but professional-quality solution. OPPO has taken things to a whole new level for its latest release though, teaming up with legendary camera brand Hasselblad to develop the most advanced smartphone camera system ever conceived. Introducing the OPPO Find X9 Ultra…

History repeats itself
It’s a little-known fact that the first ever picture of Earth taken from space was captured using a Hasselblad camera – albeit one loaded with 35mm black-and-white film. With 2026 being the 80th anniversary of this historic feat, OPPO asked us to help produce a digital recreation of the iconic image using the Find X9 Ultra’s Hasselblad Master Camera System. Never one’s to shy away from a challenge, the Sent Into Space engineers got to work creating a vehicle capable of transporting OPPO’s pocket powerhouse into the far-flung reaches of the upper stratosphere.

Building a high-altitude photography platform
Not content with sending just a single OPPO phone into space, the Tech Team designed and developed a spacecraft that could house five Find X9 Ultras, each in a unique orientation to offer an almost 360° field of view. However, this welcome platform capability boost came with a sting in its tail: the additional weight of four extra phones would inevitably result in the craft reaching a less visually-impressive peak altitude. Luckily our crack team of engineers had a solution at hand in the form of a bespoke carbon-fibre structure that would reduce the fairing weight without sacrificing the craft’s strength or rigidity.

Elevating smartphone photography
As our fellow Brits will be all too aware, the weather at this time of year can be rather unpredictable. So, when launch day arrived accompanied by the sun, we wasted no time in completing our pre-flight checks, firing up the OPPO phones and getting the photography platform into the air. The Tech Team’s carbon-fibre construction clearly did the trick, as the craft reached a whopping 101,000 feet and took some absolutely breathtaking photos in the process. What an out-of-this-world way to demonstrate the Find X9 Ultra’s imaging prowess while honouring Hasselblad’s space photography heritage. Mission complete. Check out the incredible footage below:
