Launching a Jimmy’s Iced Coffee Bottle Rocket into Space

Nowadays, you’d be hard pressed to find a supermarket food-to-go fridge without a refreshing selection of chilled coffees, and that's in large part down to Jimmy's Iced Coffee blazing a trail for cold-caffeine culture. We’re big fans of coffee in any of its glorious forms here at Sent Into Space, so we were delighted when the team from Jimmy’s approached us with a bold idea to promote its new Cookie Butter flavoured beverage.

The mission: launch an iced coffee bottle rocket into the frosty clutches of space, propelled solely by the power of caffeine (and a little bit of hydrogen). Game on!

Brewing Up a Bottle Rocket

After a cold caffeine injection (or three), the tech team hit the ground running. First up was mounting a bottle of iced coffee to a bespoke 3D-printed base – complete with delightfully Jetsons-esque fins and boosters – to form the rocket. The next task was designing a custom launch platform to transport the iced coffee into the upper stratosphere. The Sent Into Space engineers outdid themselves with this one, incorporating an array of space-capable cameras to capture the bottle rocket from a variety of angles during the flight.

We're Go for Launch

With flight paths planned and all pre-flight checks ticked off, the launch team filled the stratospheric balloon with hydrogen and attached it to the craft. All that was left was to release the bottle rocket and watch it ascend through the clouds on its way into space. Well, that and the small matter of tracking it down again once it's parachuted back to Earth!
