A lemon (Tangy) wearing sunglasses floating in space against and the curvature of the Earth's horizon.

Forget BTS and KATSEYE, Hearts2Hearts are the hottest commodity in K-pop right now. The group only released their number-one debut album late last year, so imagine our surprise when, merely months later, Hearts2Hearts asked us to help promote the release of their (apparently not-so-difficult) second album Lemon Tang!

Introducing Tangy: Hearts2Hearts' lemon mascot

Now would probably be a good time to introduce you to Tangy, the pithy protagonist of this whole affair. Images of this lovable lemon were being posted all over Instagram during the lead up to the record release, with messages from the group urging the public to report any possible sightings. Little did Hearts2Hearts’ fans know, Tangy would soon be embarking on an out-of-this-world journey into space.

Under pressure: engineering a flight seat for a lemon

We’ve launched our fair share of valuable things into space over the years, but being responsible for a sentient citrus’ wellbeing added a whole new level of pressure to this project. After 3D printing Tangy a rather stylish pair of heart-shaped sunglasses, the engineering team got to work creating a custom-moulded seat that could accommodate a lemon-shaped posterior, as well as crafting a hidden harness to secure the passenger from behind during the upcoming flight.

Sunglasses at the ready: launch day

Launch day arrived, and the hottest day of the year gave everyone’s favourite lemon a chance to test out their brand-new sunglasses. The Tech Team got to work filling the balloon, priming the tracking equipment and calming Tangy’s pre-flight nerves, before releasing the craft into the air and watching it ascend through the clouds. The flight peaked at an altitude of well over 30km, making Tangy the first-ever lemon to leave Earth’s atmosphere!

One to remember: a K-pop campaign with altitude

The entire Sent Into Space team had a fantastic time on this project and were honoured to have played a part in the release campaign of Hearts2Hearts’ new album. Tangy did prove to be a bit of a slippery customer though, managing to mysteriously escape before we could bring him in for a post-flight debrief. Check out the flight footage below, and be sure to report any sightings if Tangy makes a reappearance near you!
