Mission
Excite fans of Rick & Morty for the Season 5 premiere with a live space launch
Adult Swim are known for avant-garde, attention-grabbing stunts. For the premiere of Season 5 of Rick & Morty, they wanted to conduct the world's first premiere in space, broadcasting the episode to the stars and sharing it with fans down on Earth.
Execution
We built two detailed scale models of Rick’s ship with digital displays integrated into the dashboard. Both were launched into space over Las Vegas, capitalising on the alien landscape of the Nevada desert.
During the ascent, we showcased fan-submitted characters created using gorickyourself.com, before debuting the video in space and filming it playing above the Earth. Exterior shots of the smaller craft allowed us to create the illusion of a full-sized space ship in editing.
The final video was released on Adult Swim as the first viewing of the opening episode of Season 5, garnering massive press attention and ultimately earning a Clio GRAND award for Social Media.
