MISSION
Help Visa and Mooncard to execute the first ever contactless commercial transaction in space
Mooncard are all about reaching for the moon — as their name suggests. To demonstrate the simplicity and ease of their business payments, Mooncard wanted to complete a transaction with a Visa card over 100,000 feet above the Earth.
EXECUTION
Mooncard came to us with the challenge of completing a Visa card transaction in space, 100,000 feet above the Earth. We began by engineering a robotic arm that would execute the transaction by tapping the Visa Mooncard onto a Loyaltek card terminal. Not only did the robotic arm need to operate in the harsh conditions of Near Space, but we also had to maintain a stable internet connection to the terminal at such high altitudes.
We launched the card terminal into space alongside the robotic arm, grasping a Visa Mooncard. As the craft reached its peak altitude, our onboard computer activated the arm, tapping the card and thus executing the transaction. The card and terminal operated perfectly, with the Mooncard making a payment to a hotel in Belgium from hundreds of thousands of feet up!
Footage from the launch was shared online and garnered huge press attention across France.
